A Hot Day at the Zoo

by MirandaMowbray on May 27, 2012

Alright, here’s that zoo post I promised you!

Because of my EPAT treatments lately (only one more left!!), my feet have been hurting extra badly lately, so I know that it would be a better choice to use a wheelchair at the zoo instead of trying to walk it (the zoo’s path is a little over a mile long). My doctor also advised me not to do anything out of the ordinary in terms of physical activity, because it might interfere with the treatment’s effectiveness. Even though using a wheelchair always makes me feel sort of helpless, it was also a relief knowing that my feet would be fine even after a long trip to the zoo.

Roger Williams Park Zoo is one of my favorite places to go. That’s why Brent and I decided to get a year-long pass! It cost us $40 each, but we know that we’ll use it a lot since the zoo is only 5 minutes away from our new apartment.

First stop…. Zebras!!

Man, was it hot outside that day! All the animals were laying down in the shade, or looking like they were about to fall asleep – just like this guy ;) We felt so bad for him… he just looked so sleeeeeepy.

Next up… Audads (pronounced oo-dad)!

If you don’t already know… I LOVE GOATS. Even though Audad’s aren’t technically goats, they’re a lot like mountain goats and I love them. It looked like they were shedding their winter coat, which you can kind of see in the above picture. I bet that it’s kind of late in the year for that, but we’ve had really nasty and cold weather all throughout May this year.

Wow, look at this gorgeous giraffe! We were actually really close to them, I barely had to use my zoom for this picture. It was feeding time when we were there, so we got to watch them eat out of buckets that the zoo employees were holding. You can actually pay to get to feed to giraffes yourself, but it was $20 so we didn’t do it.

Hands down, my favorite part of the zoo is the petting area. They have farm animals like goats, sheep, chickens, pigs, a rabbit, and a donkey that you can pet! There’s this one goat that I go to see every time, and Brent practically has to drag me away from the pen every time. I want to take him home with me so bad!

There’s even this hilarious picture I posted the last time we went (Brent took me for my birthday in December) of me and this same goat over the years. I’m going to have to make a new one now!

At one point, I stuck my fingers near the goat’s mouth and he started licking me! I was in heaven. It was basically like this:

(If you don’t know what the above picture is referring to, then I’m sorry but you’re dead to me ;) )

Red Pandas! Brent loves these. I think it’s because they look so much like foxes and he loves foxes.

Next up, we got to see an animal that we didn’t see last time. I don’t know if he is new or if we just somehow missed him before.

An otter!! He was so cute. He kept swimming in circles around and around his little pond. Then we saw him swimming in somersaults trying to bite his own tail. So cute!

In the middle of the zoo, there’s this awesome little water fountain thing that you can stick your feet under when it’s really hot in the summer. Brent was all over that!

I cut him a little slack, though, because he was pushing my wheelchair around the whole zoo!

We had so much fun! It was an awesome trip.

That Ellen picture is hysterical! I hardly ever watch Ellen b/c of work, but I do catch it from time to time, and I totally saw that episode. It was SOO FUNNY!! She was so crazy! LOL!!
