Wasabi & Safehouse Date Night

by MirandaMowbray on July 24, 2012

It’s been a while since Brent and I went out on a date night. We thought it was about time! Recently I checked out this awesome new sushi place Wasabi in West Warwick, Rhode Island with my best friends Gen, Dan, and Kaeli.

When I realized that they have half-price sushi 3:30pm-5:30pm on weekdays and their sushi is amaaaazing, I knew that I had to tell Brent likeohmygodrightnow. He was just as into it as I was and we immediately made plans to go there for lunch/supper (my mom calls that “lupper”) ASAP.

And today was that day!

Look at that happy face :) I was so freaking excited for sushi!

Japanese Ramune Soda

I know what you’re saying… What the hell is that? Just for kicks, Brent ordered this cool Japanese “Ramune” soda that he saw on the drinks menu. It tasted like carbonated strawberry juice. But it also had this weird marble in it that rolled around and apparently that’s what made it fizz so much. It was kind of weird, but kind of awesome too.

Calamari

Brent immediately ordered the calamari as soon as he opened the menu. I was a little skeptical… Calamari at a Japanese restaurant? We’ll see about that (I’m a proud and loyal Italian!) … but it really was awesome! The panko-crumb batter was extra crispy and it even came with this delicious orangey-pink dipping sauce. I only had a bite, but Brent said the only “eh” thing about it was that the pieces of squid were kind of chewy and some were undercooked.

Spider Roll

Boston Roll

California Roll

I went into this trip to Wasabi knowing that I wanted to order some new and different rolls of sushi. Plus, at half-off, it was the perfect time to try them out! To be honest, I always order either the California roll or the Shrimp and Avocado roll. I know, I know… that’s not real sushi!… But I’m just a big baby, what can I say? ;)

When I went last time, Gen practically forced a Philadelphia roll down my throat, and it was so disgusting (like so bad I almost spit it out in front of everybody). For some reason, to me it tasted like bacon – and I hate bacon. (I probably lost a few followers with that bold statement, huh?)

So, needless to say, I was a little bit nervous. But today I bit the bullet and ordered two completely new-to-me rolls, the Spider Roll and the Boston Roll. I’m so glad I did!

(from the website) The Spider Roll was made up of deep-fried soft shell crab, cucumber, avocado, lettuce, and “special sauce,” wrapped with nori on the outside and topped with fish roe. The Boston Roll was made up of shrimp, avocado, and lettuce wrapped with nori on the outside.

Un-pictured, we also got an order of Vegetable and Shrimp Tempura and Hibachi Fried Rice. Both were out of this world! :)

We stopped at Walmart on the way home and while we were there, we decided to pick up a Redbox DVD to finish off our date night evening in style. Brent was absolutely dying to see Safehouse with Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, so I gave in – for his sake ;)

One thing I want to say is that – I always hear about how everybody thinks Ryan Reynolds is so hot, but… I actually think he is butt-ugly. Like, one of the worst-looking actors in Hollywood by far. I’m not sure why. I guess I definitely have a “type” (or, at least, that’s what other people say!).

The movie was actually pretty good. I got sucked in and didn’t even mind sitting down to watch it for that long (which is rare, because I can barely ever even sit still long enough to finish a Mad Men episode without a little piece of me dying inside – which, of course, drives Brent insane to no end!). I was invested in the characters and, fortunately, was able to distract myself away from Ryan Reynold’s hideousness to actually care how it all ended. Even though there was a lot of shooting and pretty much zero romance, I was surprisingly still into it! Because of that, I would definitely recommend it as a good “guy movie” that girls won’t mind watching too much.

Brent was also horrified that this was the first Denzel Washington movie I’d ever seen. Apparently we now need to have a “20-movie marathon” to catch me up on all of his awesomeness. I’m pretty sure there’s a little bit of a man-crush involved ;)

Let’s Discuss!

What’s your favorite sushi roll? I don’t know now! So many to choose from.

Who does you man have a man-crush on?

Do you have a “type”?
