“The Watch” Review & My Date with the Scale

by MirandaMowbray on July 31, 2012

I had a really great day today :) My mom and I had made plans to swim together in the pool at my parents’ house, have dinner, and go out for a movie (our weekly date!).

My Date with the Scale

The first thing I did when I got to the house was weigh myself. The scale I use there is actually mine, but I don’t have room for it in my apartment with Brent, so I only get to see how much I weigh when I go up to visit them (luckily, that’s pretty often). Lately, I’ve been kinda down on myself because I knew I’d gained about two pounds after my cousin came to visit and my trip to New York City. I was surrounded by tempting food… it happens! It turns out that I lost the two pounds I had gained and I’m back at 11 pounds down! It might not seem like that big of a deal, but I’m so proud of myself.

Calorie-Counting is Getting to Me

To be honest, counting calories has been getting harder and harder the longer I’ve been doing it. The whole thing just really bugs me and I don’t want to do it. But at the same time, I don’t really have much faith in myself to lose weight without doing it, so I guess I’ll just keep with it? I really like how Maren (from Maren’s Morsels) has daily goals that she tries to accomplish which keep her healthy, instead of counting calories. I’m debating on trying something like that. What do you think?

August is “Savor Your Food” Month

On that same note, I do have a goal I want to work on during the month of August. Eating slower and savoring my food! I was reading a post about this on Fit to the Finish (love that blog so much!!!) and it really stuck with me. I’ve always known that I’m a fast eater. More than once (okay, it actually happens ALL THE TIME), people have asked me, “Where did your food go?? You finished already?!?” I blame it on my “mangia, mangia!” Italian heritage ;) . But, as much as I like to joke about it, it is a serious problem and I  really do think it’s significantly impacting my weight loss. That’s why the month of August is going to be Savor Your Food MonthWho wants to join in??

After weighing myself, I jumped into my suit and headed out to the pool.

Gorgeous!

Dad and me in the pool

My mom and I even did some exercise in the pool.. I swam a few “laps” doing the butterfly, a few laps doing breaststroke with just my arms (that gets really hard after a few laps!), and then we stuck our legs out of the pool and did sit-ups in the water (they were so much harder than regular ones).

For dinner, my mom had stopped at Whole Foods on her way home and picked up some sushi! I could not have been happier :) Mom is awesome.

(In order, from left) We had shrimp tempura in brown rice, crabmeat salad with asparagus on white rice with fish roe, and avocado and cucumber on multigrain rice.

I’d never heard of multigrain sushi rice… have you? It was good! They were all delicious. My favorite by far was the crabmeat with asparagus. You totally wouldn’t think of asparagus and sushi going together, but it worked perfectly mmmmmm.

Mom also picked me up some organic sauerkraut and arborio rice while she was at Whole Foods! Recently I read this post from Dare You To… about the benefits of sauerkraut, and I was so intrigued that I just had to get some. But now I have no idea what to do with it… Anybody know any good sauerkraut recipes??

Also, if you don’t know already, arborio rice is SO CHEAP at Whole Foods. I’ve never seen it cheaper than it is there. You can buy it buy the bag/container-full at the bulk bins and it’s crazy cheap compared to the $9 container they have (literally, they only have one brand) at Stop & Shop .

This week’s movie was The Watch. My mom and I are huge Jonah Hill fans, so we couldn’t wait to see this one. Because we went to see it for him, I wish he’d been a bit more featured than he was. I actually didn’t even know anything about this movie (other than the fact that Jonah Hill was in it) before seeing it. I hadn’t even seen the trailer. So, I was more than a little surprised when my mom mentioned it was about aliens. I’m not an alien movie kinda girl… but it was funny.

All in all – it was not a great movie, it was more than a little stupid, and there were way too many crude sexual jokes, but it was okay. I know… that’s a raving review, isn’t it? I wouldn’t suggest seeing it in theaters, but if you’re a Vince Vaughn fan (he’s by far the best character in this movie) or a Jonah Hill fan, it’s worth getting from Redbox/Netflix.

Before the movie, I picked up this new Unreal candy bar after reading about the brand on this Fitting It All In post (Wow, I’m going crazy with blog plugging tonight, haha. I swear I’m not getting paid ;) ). And… it was SO GROSS. Like, the kind of gross where I literally had to spit it out. It was so much worse than most nutrition bars I’ve tried and it wasn’t even supposed to be that healthy. That’s a bad sign. Maybe their other stuff is good, but I’m probably not going to risk it again. I’ll stick to my Peanut Butter M&Ms, thankyouverymuch.

congrats on the loss! trips are meant to be enjoyed and most of it is usually water weight. I think calorie counting works for some people but I know I would hate to be ruled by that. I think Maren has a great approach and I would try it to see how it works for you. healthy goals that you can cross off would make me feel good.

Cool! I’ve been thinking about it more and more… trying to come up with what goals I should have.
