Rhode Island Has Farmers Markets?

by MirandaMowbray on August 6, 2012

Since we’ve been a bunch of homebodies lately, Brent and I decided to celebrate his day off yesterday with a trip to the farmers market and our new favorite sushi place Wasabi on Rt. 2 in Warwick, RI.

The farmers market I went to at Union Square in New York City last month was actually the first one I’d ever been to! So when Brent suggested we make plans for this weekend, I thought it’d be neat to see if there was a farmers market near us we could check out. I used RI’s farmer’s market database (yup, such a thing does exist) Farm Fresh RI and found one at Slater Park in Pawtucket that would be open on Sunday.

It was neat getting to see all the organic and farm-grown vegetables, but Brent and I were both expecting a little bit more. There weren’t very many stands and the prices were pretty steep compared to Stop & Shop. I wasn’t expecting it to be a huge bargain, but I couldn’t justify buying even one thing because it was really that expensive (like, $4/lb for green beans, which are often $0.99/lb at the store).

Even though we weren’t super impressed, it was still a cool experience. Maybe I’ll be more open to shopping at farmer’s markets once we have a little bit more of a disposable income. I was just bummed that we drove 20 minutes each way for something we only spent 5 minutes looking at.

After the farmer’s market, Brent and I were both in the mood for some delicious sushi.

I started out my meal with a small side of Hibachi fried rice. Yes, they did give me a spoon for my rice… it was weird. I guess Western utensils are confusing to them. It was super yummy :) I really wanted to get a side of Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura, too, but couldn’t make myself shell out the $7 for it. Next time!

This time, we restrained ourselves and only got a few rolls each. Instead of, you know, a bazillion like normal.

I got the Boston Roll (avocado, shrimp, lettuce, and mayonnaise), because I got it last time we were there and really liked it. It was delicious again! The nori on the outside is cool. At first I didn’t really like it, but now it’s growing on me.

I also got the Alaskan Roll in an effort to try something new, but was not a fan. It was super bland and there was a little bit too much fish (for me, at least). I was also confused as to why this was called the Alaska Roll when it’s made up of salmon and avocado. Sure, I get the salmon part, but… avocado? That’s just weird.

The whole avocado thing ended up with Brent and me discussing what kind of climate avocados usually grow in. At first, he insisted that they grew in cold weather, but eventually admitted that he was being dumb and that I was right – they grow in warm places like South America.

Finally, I got an awesome California Roll, one of my favorites. For his meal, Brent got two Spicy Tuna Rolls and two Sweet Potato Tempura Rolls (both are his absolute favorites). It was a perfect meal!

By the time we got back home after our trip to the farmers market and lunch, I was pretty exhausted. Within half and hour of walking through the door, I was passed out on the living room couch ;)

Alright, let’s see about this checklist. To be fair, I did use this afternoon/evening as my splurge half-day for this week. So, obviously, the numbers will be a bit off today and technically they don’t even count. I’m just trying to keep myself accurate to make sure that my splurges aren’t too over the top.

Healthy Goals Checklist

  1. At least 100g of protein. No check? I honestly have no idea. I had 27g of chicken with dinner, but lunch was sushi and I have no way of calculating that accurately.
  2. At least 4 servings of fruits/veggies. Nope. I got in 1 serving of broccoli with dinner and there was probably about 1 serving in the sushi.
  3. No more than one treat. Nope. I had one bag of peanut butter M&Ms, plus a few drinks with friends, and probably way too many tipsy handfuls of Smartfood. Even though it’s my splurge half-day and all, I’m feeling super guilty about this. Whenever I even have one drink, the alcohol makes it really hard for brain to make good healthy choices. Does this happen to anybody else?
  4. Exercise and/or stretch. Ugh. As I’m writing this post at 4am, I’m realizing that, whoops, I forgot all about this one. Going to do some hardcore stretching right now before I fall asleep (maybe that nap wasn’t such a good idea??).

I haven’t had sushi in so long, like ages. Yum. My aunt lives in RI but I have never heard of her going to a farmers market, I love them.

You’re missing out!! Sushi is my favorite. I can’t go too long without having some before I start to explode haha.

Man I wish I loved sushi, but Im just not a fish fan!! I cant even walk into most of those places because of the smell. But I always at least try it!
As for the goals, no worries, just get back on the horse! I dont drink, so I cant offer any help with that one, but I do know I tend to splurge WAY more on the weekends!

Aww, I run at Slater Park all the time. I didn’t know they had a farmer’s market – I’m usually only there at night.

I’ve noticed the farmers markets to be a bit pricey too, which is why I have only ever purchased two items. They are sure fun to look at though!

Yeah, it was still fun even though we didn’t end up getting anything :)
