New Grocery Store

by MirandaMowbray on August 11, 2012

Happy weekend! Of course that meets nothing to me since I’m currently out-of-work and out-of-school, but I’m still excited for everybody else. Plus, the boyfriend works less on the weekends, which means we get to hang out and do things like watch Master Chef even more than usual. That’s the perfect weekend in my book :) (Plus scrubbing the kitchen floor… blah, blah, blah, whatever).

I woke up and wanted soft-boiled eggs again for breakfast, so that’s what I had. Yum! They’re my new-old favorite. Do you have any of those? I used to love them as a kid when my grandma made ‘em for me, but haven’t had them in years.

Lunch was a big ol’ delicious turkey sandwich… Come to mama. Already can’t wait until tomorrow so I can have this again! Why oh why did it take me this long to remember how much I love turkey sandwiches? Literally, they’re the best thing ever. What’s your favorite thing to eat for lunch?

Midway between lunch and dinner, I started getting hungry again. So guess what I made? Another Strawberry-Watermelon Protein Smoothie. I finally finished the last of the watermelon today. Which is good, because I have some new ideas for even more delicious smoothie concoctions :) Look out for some good ones this week!

I was planning on having this salmon for dinner, but Brent texted me in the afternoon requesting ravioli and meatballs. (Seriously, who eats ravioli with meatballs?? Tell me I’m not the only one who thinks this is WEIRD.) It was so good! I used the frozen meatballs I made a few days ago and they re-heated up perfectly.

Let’s get down to business! Yesterday was Friday, so you know what happened… This girl went grocery shopping! (And paid for it after with swollen ankles and throbbing heels. But it was worth it!)

I know that I usually separate these pictures into “produce,” “meat and dairy,” and “other,” but I’m going to do something a little different this week. I discovered that there’s a PriceRite about two seconds down the road from our apartment, so I’ve started going there (along with my regular trips to Stop & Shop and Shaw’s). Because now that I’m going to three stores every Friday, it’s a lot easier for me to just separate the pictures/lists by store.

 {PriceRite}

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil – $8.99
  • Cooking Spray (butter & vegetable oil) – $1.49/each
  • Romaine Lettuce – $1.12 ($1.29/lb)
  • Red Bell Pepper – $0.67 (Hell, yes. They’re freaking $2 each at Stop&Shop)
  • Tomato – $0.42 ($0.99/lb)
  • Bananas (2) – $0.41 ($0.49/lb)
  • Large White Eggs – $1.49
  • Chicken Breast (2 lbs) – $5.36
  • Mushrooms – $0.89
  • Unsalted Butter – $2.19

{Stop & Shop}

  • Elbow Macaroni – $1
  • Pepper Jack Cheese 8oz. block – $3.49
  • Salmon (1/2 lb) – $3.95 ($5.99/lb)
  • Sarah Lee 100% Whole Wheat Bread – $2.50
  • Calise Potato Rolls – $3.49
  • Diet Orange Soda – $0.77
  • Cranberry Lime Seltzer Water – $0.60 (never tried this before!)
  • Deli American Cheese (1/2 lb) – $3.14 ($5.99/lb)
  • Frozen Fruit 1lb bags (Strawberries, Strawberries, Pineapple) – $7.50 (2/$5)
  • Shredded Parmesan Cheese – $2.99
  • Frozen Veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, butternut squash, mixed veggies) – $1.25/each

{Shaw’s}

  • Reduced-Fat Sharp Shredded Cheddar Cheese (2) – 2/$5
  • Krakus Deli Ham (3/4 lb) – $3.36 ($6.99/lb)
  • Jennie O Shaved Turkey Breast (3/4 lb) – $4.13 ($5.99/lb)
  • Strawberries – $1.99
  • Green Beans – $0.67 ($0.99/lb)
  • “Jumbo” Cantaloupe – $2.50 (Really?? That’s supposed to be “jumbo??” You’ve gotta be kidding me. You should see this thing. It’s got like a 4-inch diameter.)

Grocery Shopping Total = $72.23

(I did it!! Another week of buying LOTS of lean meats and veggies without going over my $75 budget. This is awesome! I even had enough to get olive oil, which is really expensive but a necessary staple in our house.)

Healthy Goals Checklist

  1. At least 100g of protein. Check! I got 111g today (soft-boiled eggs, turkey sandwich, protein smoothie, ravioli and meatballs).
  2. At least 4 servings of veggies. Check! I got 4.25 (turkey sandwich veggies, protein smoothie, applesauce).
  3. No more than one treat. Check! I had a serving of Dove Peanut Butter and Chocolate Squares after dinner.
  4. Exercise and/or stretch. Check! I did this ab workout while watching The Big Bang Theory this afternoon.
Thinking of adding a water goal to this list. I already know I do well on water, but I want to track it just to make sure. What do you think?

Gosh I miss my grocery stores back home because everything was so much cheaper. I can’t believe how expensive DC grocery shopping is. I am getting good at finding those stores though that carry the best deals.

Yeah, I can’t imagine having to grocery shop in a city like DC. Not only is it completely inconvenient, the prices are so much higher! Even in RI, the prices aren’t great because it’s kind of a metropolitan area (the prices are REALLY good down South!), but we’re still significantly cheaper than the big cities. Good luck finding good grocery stores near you!

Thanks for commenting, Lindsay. I love your blog! I definitely agree with you (obviously, haha). It’s a lot of work with all the planning and having to go to three stores in one day. But I really think it’s worth it! I would never be able to get the same value just shopping at one store.
