Staying Healthy and On Budget

by MirandaMowbray on August 18, 2012

Woohoo! I think everybody is glad it’s the weekend. It seems like most people I talked to thought that this was a long week, and I couldn’t agree more. The whole time I was confused about what day it was, too. Don’t you hate when that happens? I thought it was Saturday all day, yesterday! Even though I went grocery shopping, which we all know I only do on Fridays.

Speaking of which… Here’s my awesome haul! I still can’t believe how much lean protein and veggies I’ve been able to get for $75 each week. Being healthy and on budget is an awesome thing.

Stop & Shop Total = $41.82

Grocery Shopping Trip Total = $76.66 (So close to being under my $75 budget!!)

For dinner yesterday, I dug into that awesome piece of (super-cheap!) salmon. I cooked up a half-pound using my favorite salmon recipe and served it with a side of green beans. Green beans are actually one of my favorite vegetables. What’s your favorite vegetable?

Although I normally love grocery shopping, I didn’t have the best time today :( My feet were in a lot of pain, and when I got home it started getting really bad. I did get to enjoy a wonderful shower using my brand-new shower chair (it was awesome!), though.

For some reason, the outer side of my right foot is absolutely killing me, which has never happened before. It almost feels like I broke something! Debating on whether or not to go to the hospital, but it’s probably okay considering it only hurts when I stand on it, not when I’m lying/sitting down. Just another weird side effect to having broken feet, I guess.

Healthy Goals Checklist

  1. At least 100g of protein. No check. I got 92g… so close!!
  2. At least 4 servings of fruits/veggies. Check! I got 4 servings today.
  3. No more than 1 treat. Check! I had a small bowl of cereal with about 1/4 ice cream on the side. Technically that’s two separate things, but I’m counting them as one treat total. Ice cream keeps me up at night, so I almost never have it after dinner. But I love ice cream! I’ve learned that about three spoonfuls will fulfill that craving but not keep me up at night. But, to me, that doesn’t fully constitute a whole dessert. That’s where my small bowl of cereal comes in.
  4. Exercise and/or stretch. Check! I stretched before bed, but not as much as usual because of my foot issues today.

For some reason, the grocery stores near me are so much more expensive. Luckily I found a local place that I can get all my produce for over a week for 20 dollars max. Amazing.

I go grocery shopping every Friday, so about a week! I live with my boyfriend, so that’s usually enough for the two of us. Sometimes I’m kind of running low by Thursday, though. All of that will feed us both for 7 lunches and 7 dinners, although a lot of that will come from leftovers too. And obviously there’s a bunch of staples we use a lot that aren’t shown. Some of the stuff I got – like the Panko crumbs and the cheese sticks are more like staples and will last much longer than a week. But most of that stuff will be gone by next Friday!

Love this post! I don’t have those same stores here in Tampa, but the products are the same anywhere you go. Great idea and that fish looks yummy :) Thanks for posting this!
