Oki’s Date Night

by MirandaMowbray on October 1, 2012

What?! Another post from me this week? Crazy, I know.

(Before I say anything else, I want to announce some exciting news! I FINALLY finished transferring all of my recipes on over to the Recipage database! Go check out my new recipes page! I only included my original recipes on the new page – as well as just a few from some of my cookbooks, which is clearly indicated if that’s the case – but I still have a place were you can find all of my favorite recipes from other bloggers and websites. Can you believe I have over 125 original recipes?! I sure couldn’t, haha! That’s awesome! Go check them all out!!)

Tonight Brent and I went out for dinner and dessert for this month’s date night. We haven’t been out since we went to Iggy’s, so we were really excited about tonight. It was really nice to go out, specifically on a Sunday. The new week is just about to start and it begins with Monday (my most stressful day of all!). It was relaxing to be able to enjoy some quality time with Brent before the craziness starts again. I can’t tell you how excited I am to graduate in two months!!

You guys know what a penny-pincher I am… I scored a $25 gift card to this awesome sushi/hibachi restaurant Oki’s for $4 on Restaurant.com (the only requirement was that we had to spend at least $37.50… which was no problem ;) ). So our $40 meal only ended up costing us $20! That’s a sweet deal.

We started out with some sushi. Brent ordered the Tuna & Yam, I got the Shrimp Tempura, and we also got the Madonna Maki (tuna, yellow tail, cucumber, avocado, tamago, and spicy tobiko) to share. While I liked mine well enough, Brent only thought his was so-so, and neither of us liked the third one. Luckily, our waiter was so sweet and offered to take the Madonna roll off of our bill!

For my entrée, I got the Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura appetizer which I really enjoyed. They included some veggies I’d never seen in tempura before – mushroom, bell pepper, and spinach!

Brent ordered the Beef Tatsuta-Age for his dinner, which was “slices of curry-flavored beef served on a bed of Japanese yam potatoes.” He really enjoyed it! Brent was nice enough to let me have a little bite and it was definitely a thumbs-up for me, too.

Finally, we ordered the Crab Cream (“crab claw stuffed with a butter cream sauce and crispy fried”) to share, which was by far the highlight of the evening. It kind of reminded us of a crab rangoon, but the texture of the outside was much different.

Because we ended up sending part of our dinner back, we both had a little bit of room left for dessert! I suggested ice cream and Brent was more than happy with that idea. Since I guess it’s really Fall now, I think it’s safe to say it was our last trip out for ice cream this year.

Brickely’s was our favorite ice cream place back when we lived in Wakefield, RI, but we moved about six months ago and still haven’t found a new favorite ice cream place close to our new apartment. So I suggested Newport Creamery, and when Brent told me that he’d never been (what?!), we had to go.

He ordered the Peanut Butter Lover’s sundae and I got the Brownie sundae with chocolate peanut butter frozen yogurt and hot fudge & marshmallow toppings. Delicious! I definitely couldn’t finish the whole thing, though. I was FULL!!

Date night success.
