Living One Bite at a Time is the story of my journey to health. Part of the journey to health includes physical activity. Growing up, neither myself nor the people in my family were very active. I wasn’t part of a family that took hikes on the weekend or took family bike rides in their spare time. While I loved my childhood, the fact that I wasn’t predisposed to sports or any type of exercise as a child is part of the reason why I’m not at a healthy weight as a 20-year old.
Now that I’m an adult and can take full responsibility for my own health, it’s time to get serious. It’s true that I wasn’t born with the habit of exercise, but now it’s time to form that habit. As tough as it might be to take that first step, it’s so worth it. After a while, exercise becomes a part of your life and you learn to love it. Exercise has never come naturally to me, but I’ve found a way to work it into my life and I’m never going back to the sedentary lifestyle I once lived.
Exercise can be so much fun if you take the time to figure out what kinds of physical activity you enjoy. I love to swim, use free weights and machines to work out my muscles, and walk around the neighborhood with my boyfriend Brent. I will sometimes use the bike to strengthen my legs, tone my abs with crunches, and walk on the elliptical to work up a sweat. Even though I have a disability, I’ve been able to find exercises that work for me. There were times when I felt like giving up, but now I’m so glad that I didn’t.
